Galapagos Evolution

Ecuador hosts some of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. The Galapagos Islands are home to 2900 known species of fish and marine mammals not to mention endemic seabirds, the only marine iguana in the world (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) and the only penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) that lives north of the equator in the wild. Of these species, 57 are on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
